An undersea earthquake struck off the southern coast of Crete on Wednesday at 4.8, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The earthquake occurred approximately 21 kilometers (13.01 miles) from Crete’s shoreline and originated at a depth of 58.6 kilometers beneath the seabed, indicating a relatively deep seismic event.
Although the epicenter was located offshore, the earthquake was felt across a wide area, including the Peloponnese peninsula, the Greek capital Athens, parts of Egypt, and southwestern Türkiye.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. No tsunami alert has been issued.
Seismic activity is common in the eastern Mediterranean, where tectonic movements along the African and Eurasian plate boundary frequently produce earthquakes.
