Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed on Friday that a routine medical check following his December 2024 prostate surgery had detected an early-stage malignant tumor of less than one centimeter, which was subsequently treated and fully cleared.
The Israeli PM said he had requested a two-month delay in publishing the health report to prevent the disclosure from being used by what he called the "Iranian terror regime" for propaganda purposes at the height of the war.
Netanyahu posted a detailed account on X.
"A year and a half ago, I underwent successful surgery for an enlarged benign prostate, and since then I have been under routine medical monitoring. In the last monitoring, a tiny spot of less than a centimeter was discovered in the prostate. Upon examination, it turned out to be a very early stage of a malignant tumor, with no spread or metastases whatsoever," the Israeli PM said.
"The doctors told me that this is very common among men my age, and that there are two options: continue monitoring alone, or undergo treatment and remove the problem. You already know me. When I'm given information in time about a potential danger, I want to address it immediately. This is true on the national level and also on the personal level," he wrote.
"I underwent targeted treatment that removed the problem and left no trace of it. I went to a few short treatments, read a book, and continued working. The spot disappeared completely. Thank God, I overcame this too," Netanyahu added, extending thanks to the doctors and medical teams at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu said he had requested the two-month publication delay specifically because of the war.
"I requested to delay its publication by two months so that it would not be released at the height of the war, in order not to allow the Iranian terror regime to spread even more false propaganda against Israel," he wrote.
The Israeli prime minister's office confirmed the diagnosis in a statement, saying the cancer had been detected following routine monitoring after the prostate surgery and that "after the early detection of a small non-metastatic lesion," Netanyahu had undergone a successful treatment process and overcome the cancer.
Netanyahu, 76, is Israel's longest-serving prime minister and has experienced a series of health issues in recent years.
His December 2024 prostate surgery had been publicly announced at the time as a procedure for an enlarged benign prostate.
