Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said Türkiye aims to position the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as “a shining star” in the Eastern Mediterranean, with a focus on science, technology and information technology.
Speaking at an economic evaluation meeting in Kyrenia on Friday alongside TRNC Prime Minister Unal Ustel, Yilmaz said Türkiye, as a guarantor state, sees strengthening the TRNC’s political sovereignty, economic resilience and institutional capacity as a strategic responsibility.
He said that building a competitive economy capable of growing with its own resources and adapting to global conditions is an integral part of what he described as a shared destiny and national cause.
Yilmaz said an economic and financial cooperation agreement worth 21 billion Turkish liras was implemented in 2025, adding that trade volume between Türkiye and the TRNC has reached $2.8 billion.
He said efforts are underway to increase TRNC exports to Türkiye through more complementary production, particularly in agriculture and industry.
“We need to be two complementary economies,” Yilmaz said.
He also called for stronger mutual investment, encouraging TRNC citizens to invest more in Türkiye and Turkish citizens to invest more in the TRNC, adding that investments form the foundation of trade and that boosting reciprocal investment would further expand trade volumes.
