Oman will host a regional meeting Monday bringing together Iran, Iraq and other Gulf states to discuss commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional issues, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Friday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the meeting would include discussions on the outcome of negotiations between Iran and Oman over establishing safe routes for commercial vessels through the strategic waterway.
Baqaei described the initiative to bring together foreign ministers from countries bordering the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman as an important step toward building trust, cooperation and regional security.
He said Iran has consistently sought greater cooperation among countries in the region to strengthen peace and stability without what Tehran describes as destructive and divisive interference by outside actors.
Baqaei said Iran and Oman had reached an understanding on temporary shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
“Iran remains committed to ensuring the security of navigation in the strait,” he said.
However, Baqaei said shipping security could not be guaranteed as long as what Iran describes as U.S. aggression and illegal intervention, including a naval blockade and economic warfare, continues.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over the Strait of Hormuz despite a memorandum signed in June that envisioned reopening the strategic waterway as a step toward a broader peace agreement.
Baqaei expressed hope that Monday’s gathering would improve understanding among regional countries and contribute to stronger collective security.
He also pointed to Iran’s cooperation with Gulf states as part of efforts to strengthen regional peace and stability through dialogue among countries bordering the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
