Pakistan will support Saudi Arabia “to any extent” if the kingdom’s security is threatened, the country’s military spokesman said, as Riyadh faces increased attacks from Yemen’s Houthi forces.
Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told Arab News on Thursday that Pakistan would back Saudi Arabia “both diplomatically and physically.”
“We will go to any extent for the security of the two holy sanctuaries and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Chaudhry said Pakistan “fully stands with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” reiterating Islamabad’s commitment to support the kingdom diplomatically and militarily.
His comments came after Houthi forces reported fresh Saudi airstrikes this week, while Riyadh accused the group of carrying out a “cowardly” attack targeting the holy city of Mecca.
The reported attack prompted condemnation from across the Muslim world.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement last month, committing the three countries to mutual defense if any of them comes under attack.
The agreement was signed amid the war between the U.S. and Iran and regional attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi forces.
