Palestinian national athlete Allam al-Ammur was killed by Israeli fire while waiting for humanitarian aid in the famine-stricken Gaza Strip, his family said Tuesday.
Relatives told Anadolu that Ammur was near a U.S.-based aid distribution point when he was targeted and killed by Israeli soldiers.
In a statement, the Palestinian Athletics Federation expressed sorrow over the death, saying Ammur had been waiting for aid when the attack occurred.
The federation recalled that Ammur most recently won a bronze medal in the 5,000-meter race at the West Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, in March 2023.
According to Palestinian institutions, at least 673 athletes have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, amid Israel’s ongoing offensive.
Victims have included players from various sports, as well as coaches, referees, administrators, and club board members, the groups said.
The Gaza Health Ministry said Wednesday that at least 62,895 Palestinians have been killed and 158,927 injured since Israel launched its military campaign in October 2023.
In the last 24 hours alone, 76 people were killed and 298 injured, according to the ministry. It also reported 10 new fatalities from starvation and malnutrition, including two children, raising the famine-related death toll to 313, of whom 119 were children.
“Many victims remain trapped under rubble or on the streets,” the ministry said, noting that rescue teams are unable to reach them due to ongoing bombardment and lack of equipment.
Since March 18, when Israel resumed military operations after breaking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, 11,050 Palestinians have been killed and 46,886 injured, the ministry said.
The Health Ministry reported that Israeli forces continue to attack civilians gathering for humanitarian aid. In the past 24 hours, 18 people were killed and 106 wounded.
Since May 27, at least 2,158 Palestinians have been killed and more than 15,843 injured while waiting for or seeking aid, the ministry added.
Israel has maintained a full blockade of Gaza since early March, leaving 2.4 million residents facing famine, disease, and the collapse of essential services.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the enclave.
