Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he hoped the railway between Armenia and Türkiye would open quickly as Yerevan seeks to diversify export routes and expand regional connectivity.
Pashinyan, whose party secured a parliamentary majority in the June 7 elections, made the remarks during a Cabinet meeting, according to Armenia’s official Armenpress news agency.
He said both tracks of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway were operational and that he had discussed the issue with the leaders of Georgia and Türkiye.
“Both tracks of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway are operational,” Pashinyan said. “I discussed this issue with the Georgian prime minister, and he assured me that there would be no problems in either direction.”
“I also discussed this with the president of Türkiye, and he confirmed that these lines are open,” he added. “We hope the Armenia-Türkiye railway will also open as soon as possible.”
Pashinyan said Armenia was working to diversify the markets and routes available to its exporters.
He said the government’s efforts to broaden market access were beginning to produce results and stressed the need to increase exports.
Pashinyan also called for the establishment of logistics centers to support trade and transportation after new regional routes become available.
He said improved railway connections would form part of Armenia’s broader efforts to expand economic opportunities and strengthen regional logistics.
Pashinyan also said opportunities would increase significantly under the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP, which is planned to connect mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan.
He said Armenia’s government was continuing to work on market diversification and expected the proposed transport project to create additional economic and logistical opportunities.
Pashinyan emphasized that the next stage should include encouraging the development of logistics hubs and increasing the country’s exports.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said earlier that Türkiye’s normalization process with Armenia was continuing in close coordination with Azerbaijan.
Fidan made the remarks at a joint news conference at Istanbul’s Ciragan Palace after the 10th Türkiye-Azerbaijan-Georgia Trilateral Foreign Ministers Meeting.
“We support the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Fidan said. “We also hope that Azerbaijan’s legitimate concerns will be addressed and that the peace agreement will be signed without delay.”
“The normalization process we are conducting with Armenia is also continuing in close coordination with Azerbaijan,” he added.
Fidan said important progress had been made over the past four years and described the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process as the most promising result of a regional vision centered on development, connectivity and shared prosperity.
