German police arrested an armed man outside the headquarters of the co-governing Christian Democratic Union on Monday evening, the Bild newspaper reported Tuesday, citing a police spokesperson.
According to the report, the man was carrying a knife or sword and was spotted by passersby as he approached the CDU headquarters in Berlin’s Mitte district.
At the same time, the man called the emergency number himself and said he intended to commit suicide. He also claimed to have explosives in his jacket, the report said.
Police cordoned off a large area around the scene and deployed specially trained negotiators to persuade the man to surrender. Special police forces later overpowered him near the entrance of the CDU headquarters.
The man is believed to be about 40 years old and speaks German. Authorities have not released further details about his identity or the weapon or weapons he was carrying.
No injuries were reported.
