Qatar said its oil tanker Al-Rekayyat was targeted while transiting near the Strait of Hormuz, calling the incident an unacceptable attack on international maritime navigation and global energy security.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said the targeting of the vessel was a grave and clear violation of international law, particularly rules guaranteeing freedom of navigation and safe passage through international waterways.
"The targeting of the Qatari vessel Al-Rekayyat while transiting near the Strait of Hormuz constitutes an unacceptable attack on the security and safety of international maritime navigation, the security of global energy supplies, and a grave and explicit violation of international law," Ansari said in a statement on X.
Ansari blamed Iran for the attack and said Doha holds Tehran fully legally responsible for the incident and any resulting consequences.
"We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease all practices that undermine regional security or threaten the safety of international maritime navigation, and refrain from endangering global energy supplies and the resources of the countries of the region in pursuit of narrow interests," he said.
"We hold it fully legally responsible for this attack and for any resulting damages and consequences," he added.
Iranian state television, citing unnamed sources, reported that Iran's navy had struck an oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz after it "ignored warnings."
The report said the Qatari vessel Al-Rekayyat had planned to pass through the Oman route in the Strait of Hormuz with U.S. Navy support, but was targeted after ignoring repeated warnings.
