A joint Qatari-American search team has reportedly discovered the remains of U.S. journalist Austin Tice, who went missing in Syria in 2012, in a cemetery located in the Aleppo countryside..
Tice, a former U.S. Marine and freelance journalist, was working for several major news outlets — including Agence France-Presse, McClatchy, The Washington Post, and CBS — when he was detained at a checkpoint near Damascus in August 2012 while covering the Syrian conflict.
Qatar’s international search and rescue team, which has participated in disaster missions in Morocco and Türkiye in recent years, began the recovery operation on Wednesday, accompanied by several U.S. nationals. So far, the team has located the remains of three bodies, according to Reuters.
The U.S. government has long maintained that Tice was alive and held captive in Syria, though his exact fate remained unknown for over a decade.
As of Saturday, there has been no official confirmation from Washington or Doha regarding the identity of the remains.
