The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced that they had advanced into Chad’s border area, expressing regret over clashes they described as unintentional with Chadian forces, while Chad condemned the attack that killed seven of its soldiers.

In a statement published on its official website, the RSF said it fully respects the sovereignty of the Republic of Chad and its internationally recognized borders.

It offered condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. The RSF also praised the Chadian government’s role in hosting Sudanese refugees and supporting efforts toward peace and stability in Sudan and the wider region.

The statement said the incident “was not intentional, but occurred as a result of an unintended mistake during field operations” that were aimed at pursuing what it described as militias and mercenary movements that had come from inside Chadian territory.

The RSF also claimed that the forces it is fighting are attempting to provoke regional tensions to undermine security and stability between the two countries.

Statement delay and calls for accountability

The RSF said the delayed release of its statement was due to its desire to verify the circumstances of the incident accurately and responsibly.

It reiterated its commitment to full accountability, continuing investigations, and taking the necessary measures to hold anyone responsible for negligence accountable, in accordance with applicable laws.

It renewed what it called its “firm commitment to the principles of good neighborliness” and to working jointly with “brothers” in Chad in a way that serves security, stability and peace in the region.

Chad condemns attack, cites civilian impact

The Chadian government strongly condemned the RSF attack inside its territory, saying it resulted in the deaths of seven Chadian soldiers and injuries to others. In an official statement issued Friday evening, it said armed elements affiliated with the RSF illegally crossed the border last Thursday and carried out an armed operation targeting Chadian defense and security forces, as well as civilians, in the east of the country.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five in the Darfur region in the west, excluding some northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control. The army, in turn, holds most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east and center, including the capital, Khartoum.

The conflict between the army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions.
