Russia may have targeted Ukraine’s western Lviv Oblast with an Oreshnik missile, an intermediate-range ballistic system which is capable of carrying a nuclear payload, Ukrainian media reports.

The site of the attack in Lviv was approximately 70 kilometers from Poland’s border.

Lviv Regional Military Administration head Maksym Kozytskyi said the strike hit an infrastructure facility in the region.

The Oreshnik missile is a type of ballistic weapon for which Ukraine currently has no air defense capabilities.

Speaking to Liga.net, the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, stated it was up to the Ukrainian military to officially determine if the weapon used was indeed an Oreshnik.

Reported launch of Oreshnik missiles from Kapustin Yar test site

Shortly before the attack, Ukrainian Telegram channels reported a potential launch from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test site, while the Ukrainian Air Force issued an air raid alert covering the entire country.

Residents in Lviv Oblast reported hearing more than ten powerful explosions, which may have been caused by multiple warheads detonating upon impact.

Ukrainian analysts on social media also cautioned that Russia could launch additional Oreshnik missiles later during the night.

Earlier, Moscow transferred this intermediate-range ballistic missile system to Belarus, a move that placed multiple European cities within its potential strike range.
