Saudi Arabia said Monday it intercepted and destroyed 61 drones in the country’s Eastern Region, according to the Saudi Defense Ministry.

The Saudi Defense Ministry announced the interceptions in separate posts on the social media platform X early Monday.

The development comes amid escalating hostilities following joint attacks by Israel and the U.S. on Iran on Feb. 28.

According to reports, the attacks killed around 1,300 people, including Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Since the strikes, tensions across the region have intensified.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets.

Saudi, UAE leaders discuss Iranian attacks

Separately, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a phone call with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the latest developments in the region.

According to a statement by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders discussed the implications of recent events for regional security and stability.

They also affirmed that continued Iranian attacks against the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council represent a dangerous escalation threatening regional stability.

The leaders stressed that GCC countries would continue efforts to defend their territories and mobilize available capabilities to support regional security and preserve stability.
