The Saudi-led coalition said Friday it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthis in the Mecca region, a day after debris from intercepted Houthi missiles injured one person in Riyadh.
“Interception and destruction of a drone in the Holy Mecca region launched by the terrorist Houthi militia,” the coalition said in a post on X.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the drone sent by the Iran-backed Houthis was intercepted and destroyed in the Mecca region.
Yemen's Houthis denied launching any attack towards Saudi Arabia on Friday, after the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the group over the Mecca region.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree dismissed the coalition's account as false in a post on X.
"The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm that they did not carry out any operation today toward the Saudi depth and that what the Saudi enemy claims regarding the interception of a drone in the airspace of Mecca, the Honorable, is a great and grave falsehood. Our operations target its oil facilities and military bases, and there is no longer anyone in this world who believes these fabrications and lies propagated by the criminal Al Saud regime," he wrote.
Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Directorate said shrapnel fell during the interception of two ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis on Thursday.
One person was lightly injured, and a house and a vehicle were damaged, the directorate said.
The Houthis have been targeting Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and drones as clashes between Yemen’s government forces and the group have intensified, holding the Riyadh responsible for attacks against them.
Yemen has been gripped by civil war since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. The Saudi-led coalition has backed Yemen’s internationally recognized government since March 2015.
The drone interception over the Mecca region is the latest in a string of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
