The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels said Friday that it had intercepted and destroyed a drone in Saudi Arabia's Mecca region, following repeated attacks on the kingdom by the Iran-backed group.

"Interception and destruction of a drone in the Mecca region," coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki wrote on social media.

Malki did not specify where the drone originated or identify those responsible for the incident.

The announcement comes amid repeated Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, the coalition announced that Saudi air defenses had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis toward Najran in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

"Air defenses intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward Najran," Maliki said on X.

He said debris had fallen following the interceptions and that authorities were assessing possible damage.

The announcement followed a warning issued by Saudi Civil Defense in Najran "to alert of a potential danger."

Authorities subsequently announced that the danger had passed.

Houthi attacks intensify amid Yemen conflict

The interceptions come amid an escalation in fighting in Yemen, with the Houthis launching repeated missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory in recent weeks.

Yemen has been engulfed in civil war since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and other areas in September 2014.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of Yemen's internationally recognized government.

The latest incidents add to a series of aerial threats reported by Saudi authorities as fighting between the Houthis and government forces continues.
