Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said Wednesday that two brothers wanted for extremist takfiri ideology were killed in a security raid in the northern district of Ramtha after they opened fire on officers, injuring three.

The Ramtha district lies in the far north of the kingdom and includes several towns and villages. It is administratively part of Irbid Governorate and borders Syria.

The directorate, which operates under the Interior Ministry, said that “a special security force raided a location in the Ramtha district on Tuesday evening that was sheltering two wanted brothers (whose identities were not disclosed) with takfiri leanings, in connection with important investigative cases.”

It added that “as soon as the security force arrived at the site, the two wanted men opened heavy fire on them, injuring three members of the raiding team, who were taken to a hospital for treatment.”

The directorate confirmed that “rules of engagement were applied, and the two outlaws were killed after they barricaded themselves inside the location and used their mother as a human shield to prevent the force from targeting them.”

The statement noted that the security team managed to move their mother to safety “without causing her any harm.”

Firearms and ammunition seized

According to the Public Security Directorate, the site where the two suspects had taken refuge was searched, and a number of firearms and ammunition were seized.

On Tuesday evening, the Jordanian government announced that security forces were carrying out a raid targeting “outlaws” in the country’s north.

Minister of Government Communications and government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani said in a post on X that “security agencies are conducting a security raid against outlaws in the Ramtha district.”

“Details will be announced by the competent security authorities once the operation concludes,” he added.

Jordan steps up counterterrorism efforts

Jordan’s security services continue to combat terrorism, having succeeded in numerous operations that resulted in the killing or arrest of several extremist leaders. Amman has also strengthened cooperation with Damascus to secure the border and prevent militants or weapons from crossing.

Jordan has participated in numerous conferences and forums focused on countering terrorism and combating extremism. In 2023, the Jordanian government affirmed that it would remain an active partner in the international coalition against ISIS, describing it as an effective and essential collective mechanism for defeating terrorism.

The kingdom has played a significant role in efforts that contributed to eliminating the group in several areas.

Al-Wurdat denounces extremist threats

The Al-Wurdat tribe condemned the criminal plots foiled by the General Intelligence Directorate, which aimed to undermine national security and incite chaos and material sabotage inside the kingdom—acts that violate human and Islamic principles.

The tribe praised the successful operation carried out by Jordan’s intelligence and security services against terrorist cells, expressing pride in the “men of truth” who sacrifice their lives for the security of the nation and its people.

The statement stressed that confronting this misguided and extremist group requires strengthening national unity and collective social, political and security efforts.

It added that those who harbor ill intentions should know that Jordan will remain a fortified stronghold against saboteurs and “bats of darkness,” protected by its Hashemite banner, Arab Army, vigilant security services and the unity of its people.

The Al-Wurdat tribe emphasized the need to deal firmly with anyone who attempts to threaten the country’s security or stability. It called on all Jordanians to stand united behind their Hashemite leadership to confront hateful groups spreading extremist ideas and to safeguard the nation from all forces of evil and destruction.
