Two people died when a small plane crashed in southwestern Germany on Sunday, according to German media reports.

Police confirmed that both people on board were killed in the crash, which took place near the city of Gundelsheim, regional public broadcaster SWR reported.

A fire broke out after the crash but was extinguished by emergency crews at the scene.

The crash occurred shortly before noon near Gundelsheim in the Heilbronn district of Baden-Württemberg, German newspaper Bild reported, citing police.

According to Bild, the ultralight aircraft was approaching a small airfield in Gundelsheim when, for reasons that remain unclear, it attempted to go around.

The aircraft first caught on a fence, then struck a tree before crashing into a vineyard, the newspaper reported.

Registration markings completely destroyed

A Bild reader who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash said he first saw smoke and then flames, adding that firefighters arrived relatively quickly.

Witnesses also heard the aircraft’s engine shortly before hearing the impact, according to Bild.

Police told the newspaper that the victims had not yet been identified because the aircraft’s registration markings were completely destroyed in the fire.

The plane had been registered by telephone to use the airfield Sunday, but personal details were due to be recorded only after landing, Bild reported.

Aviation safety investigators were at the scene and had begun examining the cause of the crash, according to the report.
