Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, has requested special court permission to leave the country in early July. Her lawyers submitted a formal request to allow her to accompany her husband to the NATO summit in Ankara
Gomez, who is being tried on four separate charges and whose passport has been temporarily seized, applied to the court to leave Spain between July 7 and 10.
The request covers her planned attendance at the NATO Ankara summit with Sanchez, as well as her daughter's graduation ceremony in London.
Spanish media reports noted that the spouses of leaders attending the NATO Ankara summit had also been officially invited.
Gomez is accused of influence peddling, corruption, embezzlement, and abuse of office.
She becomes the first spouse of a prime minister in the country's history to have her passport seized.
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered the precautionary measure over suspicion that Gomez could flee the country.
Gomez handed over her passport to the court on June 24 following the judge's decision.
If approved, the court request would allow Gomez to travel abroad from July 7 to 10 to accompany Sanchez to the NATO summit in Ankara and attend her daughter's graduation ceremony in London.
Gomez last accompanied Prime Minister Sanchez on a trip to China two months ago.
