Former Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq said Friday that Türkiye has provided support to Sudan across multiple sectors since the conflict erupted in Sudan in 2023, according to Anadolu Agency.

Speaking at a seminar in Ankara on the ongoing conflict in Sudan, former Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq highlighted Türkiye’s support for internally displaced people, noting that the Sudanese remain “very grateful to Turkish authorities.”

“When it comes to rebuilding Sudan after the war, Türkiye is the first and only country that comes to mind,” he added.

Al-Sadiq emphasized that Sudan’s stability is crucial for the stability of the African continent.

He also criticized the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for failing to provide effective support and noted that the United Nations’ actions have been limited to issuing statements.

Sudan’s simple gesture to express gratitude to Türkiye

Suakin Island in Sudan’s Red Sea State hosted a popular initiative on Aug. 8, expressing gratitude to Türkiye, both its government and people, for their support to the Sudanese population.

The ceremony was held in the Customs building on Suakin Island, which was restored by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

The initiative was organized by the nongovernmental organization (NGO) “People Support Association” under the slogan “A stand of loyalty and gratitude.”

It was aimed at expressing Sudanese appreciation to Ankara, with the participation of Turkish Ambassador Fatih Yildiz, senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Information, and community leaders from across Sudan.

During the ceremony, participants expressed their appreciation to Türkiye for supporting Sudan in difficult times, extending their thanks to the Turkish government and people, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In his speech, Major General Omar Nimer, head of the People's Support Association, described the initiative as a grassroots gesture of gratitude from Suakin to the Turkish president, government, and people for their support and solidarity with Sudan and its citizens.

Key partner in Sudan’s reconstruction

According to Sudanese media reports, Türkiye has intensified its involvement in Sudan’s reconstruction, positioning itself as a major partner in the country’s post-conflict recovery.

Earlier this month, Sovereignty Council member Ibrahim Gaber met with Ambassador Fatih Yildiz to discuss the role of Turkish contractors and businesspeople in rehabilitating war-torn areas and providing support in health, education and infrastructure sectors.

Ambassador Yildiz noted that Türkiye is currently operating from Port Sudan, focusing on the development of seaports and reconstruction projects.

He emphasized Ankara’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Sudan by encouraging Turkish investment in industrial and development projects that directly benefit Sudanese communities.

Gaber praised Türkiye’s broad support across multiple sectors and reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to reconstructing and rehabilitating facilities damaged by the Rapid Support Forces.

Since April 2023, Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a bloody and destructive war, which regional and international mediation efforts have so far failed to end.

The conflict has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced or forced into exile around 15 million people, according to the United Nations and local authorities, while a study conducted by U.S. universities estimates the death toll at approximately 130,000.

Recently, the Rapid Support Forces have been losing ground in several Sudanese states to the army, which has regained control of Khartoum and White Nile states.

In the remaining 16 states, the Rapid Support Forces now control only parts of North and West Kordofan, pockets in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, as well as four of the five states in the Darfur region.
