Syrian security forces said Tuesday they had foiled a plot by a Hezbollah-linked cell to attack the Homs oil refinery, arresting members of the group and seizing explosives allegedly prepared for the operation.

Syria’s General Intelligence Service carried out the operation in coordination with the Internal Security Forces, according to a statement reported by state news agency SANA.

Authorities did not disclose how many people were arrested or when the alleged plot was uncovered.

The Homs refinery is one of Syria’s main oil-processing facilities and a key supplier of fuel to the domestic market.

Hezbollah has denied previous Syrian accusations

There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese group, which has repeatedly denied Syrian accusations that it was involved in security incidents and militant activity inside Syria.

Since the overthrow of former President Bashar Assad in December 2024, Syrian authorities have accused Hezbollah of involvement in several alleged plots, including planned assassinations, rocket attacks and arms smuggling.

Hezbollah fought alongside Assad’s forces during Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war, but relations with Damascus have deteriorated sharply since his removal.

Syria cites other recent security operations

Syrian authorities have also reported several recent operations against suspected Daesh cells.

On Nov. 1, the General Intelligence Service and Internal Security Forces in Deir Ezzor arrested two suspected Daesh cell members in an intelligence-led operation.

Authorities also said they foiled a Daesh plot targeting a police patrol in the Damascus countryside on Oct. 16.

On Oct. 10, security forces dismantled another Daesh-linked cell in the Houla area of Homs province, preventing planned attacks on places of worship and security patrols, according to the supplied information.
