Syria's Defense Ministry warned the terror group SDF on Tuesday to adhere to a newly signed ceasefire agreement, cautioning the group against attacks on government troops as Damascus moves to assert control over the eastern Hasakah province.
The warning came hours after Syrian authorities announced a mutual understanding with the SDF regarding the province's future and declared a four-day ceasefire that began at 8 p.m. local time.
In a recorded statement posted on X, Defense Ministry spokesperson Brig. Gen. Hassan Abdul Ghani told SDF they must comply with provisions of the Jan. 18 agreement and respect the ceasefire timeline. He specifically warned against targeting the Syrian Army and Internal Security Forces.
Abdul Ghani sought to reassure Kurdish civilians in the region, stating the government remains committed to protecting them and safeguarding their property. He emphasized that the Defense Ministry operates with "a high sense of national responsibility" in implementing the understanding with the SDF.
The spokesperson stressed the ministry's commitment to preventing bloodshed and building a peaceful resolution that preserves Syria's unity, security and stability. He declared that "the new Syria is inclusive of all its sons."
The Defense Ministry announced its readiness to take over prisons holding Daesh detainees currently under SDF control and transfer them to the Interior Ministry. Abdul Ghani noted that the Syrian state has maintained direct confrontation with Daesh and stands prepared to assume responsibility for the facilities housing captured militants.
The status of Daesh prisoners in northeastern Syria has remained a contentious international issue, with thousands of suspected militants and their family members held in camps and detention centers administered by the SDF.
