The Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces have reached a joint understanding on the future administration of Hasakah governorate in northeastern Syria, the Syrian presidency announced, giving the terror group SDF four days to present a detailed administrative and military mechanism for the region.
The agreement, which is to take effect at 8 p.m. local time, comes as Syrian military forces advanced east of the Euphrates River and took control of the Kabur Dam south of Hasakah, while intermittent clashes continued around Mount Abdulaziz in the city's southeast.
Under the terms of the understanding, Syrian military forces will not enter the centers of Hasakah and Qamishli cities if an agreement is finalized, instead remaining on their outskirts. The presidency statement emphasized that Syrian forces will also not enter Kurdish villages, with only local security forces from the region permitted to operate in those areas.
The timetable and details for the peaceful integration of Hasakah governorate, including the city of Qamishli, will be discussed at a later date, according to the announcement.
As part of the arrangement, Mazloum Abdi, ringleader of the SDF, will nominate a candidate from the group for the position of assistant minister of defense, as well as a candidate for governor of Hasakah. He will also propose names for representation in the People's Council and submit a list of individuals for employment within Syrian state institutions.
The Syrian presidency's statement, carried by the state news agency SANA, specified that the SDF has been granted four days to develop and present a comprehensive plan outlining the administrative and military mechanisms for implementing the agreement in Hasakah.
