The Syrian Army announced on Saturday that its first units have begun entering Deir Hafir, east of Aleppo, after the terrorist organization YPG-led SDF withdrew from areas west of the Euphrates River.

Syrian state television Al-Ikhbariya TV reported that Syrian Army units have begun entering the western region of the Euphrates River, starting from Deir Hafir city.

The army deployed units to Humaymah village in the city's countryside in the morning hours. After the removal of earthen barriers on the roads, the Syrian Army entered the area from the west of Deir Hafir to establish control.

Following the news that the terrorist organization would withdraw, civilians in Humaymah village in Deir Hafir returned to the streets, which had emptied during the start of the operation.

Residents described it as "liberation" and said the terrorist organization had long made their lives difficult.

Syrian Defense Ministry welcomes SDF withdrawal

The Syrian Defense Ministry welcomed the YPG/SDF terrorist organization's decision to withdraw from contact lines west of the Euphrates River.

The ministry said it will closely monitor the completion of the withdrawal of all personnel and military equipment to the east of the Euphrates.

The move will be carried out simultaneously with the deployment of Syrian Army units to the regions to ensure security and restore state sovereignty, the ministry said.

Authorities emphasized that the process will facilitate the safe and rapid return of the region's residents to their homes and villages, while paving the way for the reactivation of state institutions.

The Syrian Army urged civilians not to enter the previously designated military operation zone in Deir Hafir until the area is secured and landmines are cleared.

"We call on our civilian families not to enter the previously designated operation zone until the Syrian Arab Army completes securing it and removing landmines and war remnants, to ensure your safety," the SANA news agency quoted the army's Operations Command as saying.

SDF ringleader claims 'good faith'

Ferhat Abdi Sahin, also known as Mazloum Abdi, a ringleader of the terrorist organization YPG-led SDF targeted by the army's military operation west of the Euphrates, claimed that terrorist elements would withdraw to regions east of the river starting at 7:00 a.m. local time Saturday.

Sahin argued in a statement on social media that the withdrawal was intended to demonstrate "good faith in complying with the terms of the March 10 agreement."

Background on Syria-SDF

The Syrian Army declared areas west of the Euphrates, particularly Deir Hafir and Maskanah, military zones on Jan. 13 and launched an operation against identified terrorist targets after establishing humanitarian corridors on the M15 highway for civilian evacuations.

On Friday, the Syrian Army published maps showing four locations used by the YPG/SDF terrorist organization as launch points for its operations in Deir Hafir.

On Monday, the Syrian Army sent additional forces to eastern Aleppo after detecting the arrival of more SDF members and remnants of the ousted regime near the towns of Maskanah and Deir Hafir.

In March 2025, the Syrian presidency announced an agreement for the YPG/SDF integration into state institutions, reaffirming the country's territorial unity and rejecting any attempts at division. However, authorities said the SDF has failed to comply with the terms of those agreements.
