The first session of the People’s Assembly, following the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria, took place under the chairmanship of President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
The session, attended by the elected members of the Assembly and the 70 members appointed by President Sharaa, was held on Sunday after a delay of about a week.
The members of parliament took their oaths, with the attendance of the embassies of numerous foreign countries as guests of honor.
The seat of the Idlib MP Mustafa Kulthum, who passed away, as well as the three seats allocated to the Suweida Governorate in Parliament, remain vacant.
President Sharaa stated in his speech that Syria is “writing a new chapter in its history that reflects its own civilization, values, and heritage” and called for “turning a new page together on the path to building a modern Syria.”
He stated that the steps to be taken in areas such as the economy, employment, and infrastructure services must be accompanied by a shared sense of responsibility among institutions, particularly the People’s Assembly.
