Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, becoming the first Syrian head of state to do so since 1967, Syrian sources said to Turkish media.
A Syrian Foreign Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press, confirmed al-Sharaa’s upcoming participation. “President al-Sharaa will attend the General Assembly in New York and deliver a speech,” the official told AFP.
The address would mark the first time in 58 years that a Syrian president has spoken before the UN’s main deliberative body.
Al-Sharaa came to power last December after the removal of former dictator Bashar al-Assad. His government has since sought to rebuild Syria’s international ties after years of isolation.
In May, al-Sharaa met U.S. President Donald Trump in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Following the talks, Trump announced that Washington would lift sanctions on Syria.
