U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Iran to release eight women he said were facing execution, suggesting the move could improve prospects for peace talks with Washington.
“I would greatly appreciate the release of these women,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “Would be a great start to our negotiations!”
Trump’s post accompanied a repost of a claim on X by U.S.-based pro-Israel activist Eyal Yakoby, who alleged that eight women were at risk of death by hanging. The claim, which included photographs but no names, could not be independently verified.
The appeal comes as Washington and Tehran are expected to resume negotiations in Islamabad.
Vice President JD Vance, along with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is set to travel to Pakistan for a second round of talks.
Iran has not officially confirmed its participation, having demanded the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade as a precondition.
The two-week ceasefire, which Trump said ends Wednesday evening Washington time, has been described by the president as having been violated “numerous times” by Iran.
He has said extending the truce is “highly unlikely” if no agreement is reached beforehand.
