U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the mass migrant crossings into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta could be repeated in the U.S. within three years if Democrats win future elections, Fox News reported.
“It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,” Trump told Fox News, referring to Democrats winning elections.
“If the Democrats get in, you will not live a very good life,” he added.
Spain and Morocco reinforced the border around Ceuta on Friday after tens of thousands of migrants crossed by land and sea, prompting Madrid to deploy military forces.
The Spanish Interior Ministry estimated that about 49,000 people entered Ceuta in a single day and that at least 19 bodies were found in the water.
A Spanish police source separately told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that around 40,000 migrants had crossed in recent days and that 18 people died while attempting to reach the enclave.
The crossings appeared to slow Friday after Moroccan authorities deployed water cannon trucks, pushed crowds back and strengthened security around the border fence.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska were expected to visit the Tarajal crossing as authorities worked to contain the surge.
