Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on Thursday organized the Turkic States Forum on Combating Disinformation panel in Ankara, bringing together representatives from Turkic states to discuss challenges related to disinformation, information security and media literacy.

Participants from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus addressed how disinformation affects societies and national security, particularly during periods of crisis.

Javid Musayev, head of Azerbaijan’s Communication Policy Sector at the Department for Work with NGOs and Communication, said information security is an integral part of national security.

He said Azerbaijan recognized the importance of combating disinformation through its experience during the Second Karabakh War.

Zarina Kalmuratova, chief specialist at Kyrgyzstan’s Culture, Information, Youth and Sports Policy Ministry, stressed the importance of media literacy, noting that a large amount of both correct and incorrect information spreads rapidly via social media platforms.

Disinformation, media literacy and regional cooperation

Fehmi Gurdalli, general manager of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s state-run news agency, TAK, said disinformation and organized fake news have made societies open to provocation, particularly during times of crisis.

He said disinformation does not only refer to false or fake news, but that news blackouts also constitute a form of disinformation.

The panel concluded with a question-and-answer session.

Separately, Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran held a meeting with Omer Kocaman, deputy secretary general of the Organization of Turkic States, as part of the event.

Duran said on Türkiye’s social media platform NSosyal that the meeting addressed efforts to increase institutional solidarity in combating disinformation under the Organization of Turkic States, strengthen common communication strategies and establish lasting cooperation mechanisms in the media across the Turkic world.
