Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu said the Turkish military presence in Cyprus is “vital,” describing the Turkish Armed Forces as a guarantee of peace and security on the island.
Ertugruloglu made the remarks while receiving Turkish Land Forces Commander Gen. Metin Tokel, who was in northern Cyprus to inspect the Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Command, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Tokel was accompanied by Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Sebahattin Kilinc.
Ertugruloglu said the Turkish army plays a strong role in the region.
“The Turkish military presence in Cyprus is of vital importance,” he said. “The Turkish Armed Forces are the guarantee of peace and security in Cyprus.”
He added that the Turkish military’s presence on the island was the strongest guarantee of the Turkish Cypriot people’s peace, existence, security and future.
Ertugruloglu and Tokel exchanged commemorative plaques at the end of the meeting.
