Türkiye and seven other countries have strongly condemned Israel’s approval of a bill allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, warning it could escalate tensions and undermine regional stability.

In a joint written statement, the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates denounced the Israeli parliament’s approval of legislation permitting the application of the death penalty against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

The ministers said they “strongly condemn” the move by what they described as the “occupying power Israel,” warning that the decision represents a dangerous escalation, particularly as it would be applied in a discriminatory manner against Palestinian detainees.

Ministers warn of escalation and discriminatory practices

They also warned against increasingly discriminatory and escalating Israeli practices, accompanied by rhetoric that denies the inalienable rights and existence of the Palestinian people and reinforces what they described as an “apartheid system” in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The ministers stressed that such measures risk further inflaming tensions on the ground and weakening regional stability.

Concerns grow over detainee conditions, violations

The ministers expressed deep concern over the conditions of Palestinians held by Israel, citing credible reports of abuse, including torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, starvation and denial of basic rights.

The statement warned that the legislation reflects a broader pattern of violations against the Palestinian people and reiterated opposition to what they described as discriminatory, repressive and aggressive policies targeting Palestinians.

They emphasized the urgent need to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions and highlighted the importance of accountability.

The ministers also called for strengthened international efforts to preserve stability and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
