Türkiye has completed bureaucratic preparations to launch direct trade with Armenia as part of confidence-building steps under the normalization process that has continued since 2022, the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oncu Keceli said the preparations for starting direct trade between Türkiye and Armenia were completed as of May 11, 2026.

The step was taken within the framework of confidence-building measures in the ongoing normalization process between the two countries, Keceli said.

Preparations completed for direct trade

Keceli said the new arrangement will allow goods traveling from Türkiye to Armenia through a third country, or goods coming from Armenia to Türkiye through the same route, to list their final destination or point of departure as “Armenia/Türkiye.”

The arrangement applies to goods moving from Türkiye to a third country and then to Armenia, as well as goods moving through the same route in the opposite direction.

The Foreign Ministry said the measure is part of efforts to advance the normalization process with Armenia.

Work on opening common border continues

Keceli said technical and bureaucratic work needed to open the common border between Türkiye and Armenia is still ongoing.

The statement did not announce the opening of the border, but said necessary preparations for that step continue.

Keceli also said Türkiye will continue contributing to the development of economic relations in the region.

He described the move as a historic opportunity to strengthen lasting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.

Türkiye will keep supporting efforts to further advance cooperation for the benefit of all countries and peoples of the region, Keceli said.
