Türkiye’s Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran on Sunday rejected remarks by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz targeting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the country, saying Israeli “threats, provocations and smear campaigns” would not change Türkiye’s position on rights and justice.
Duran made the comments in a statement on NSosyal, a Turkish social media platform. He said Katz’s remarks were a sign of the “political desperation” Israeli officials have fallen into ahead of upcoming elections in Israel.
Duran described Katz’s statements as insolent and said the allegations against Türkiye were baseless.
He said such accusations could not cover up what he called the Israeli government’s genocidal record in Gaza or the aggressive policies it continues to pursue in the region.
Israel has faced widespread international criticism over its conduct of the war in Gaza, and it has rejected accusations of genocide. Türkiye has been among the most vocal critics of Israeli policy in Gaza.
Duran also accused Katz of openly threatening with death figures involved in ceasefire and peace negotiations.
He called this “a new manifestation” of what he described as the Israeli government’s disregard for international law, and said the approach amounted to openly ignoring international public opinion.
His statement did not name the individuals he said had been threatened.
Duran said Türkiye, under Erdogan’s leadership, would continue to defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, justice and lasting peace.
“The threats, provocations and smear campaigns of the Israeli administration will not change our country’s stance in favor of rights and justice,” he said.
