Türkiye's newly appointed Interior Minister, Mustafa Ciftci, announced that Türkiye is evaluating all alternatives and preparing for three different scenarios against a potential wave of migration from Iran, which has been under attack by the US and Israel since Feb. 28.
According to Hurriyet, Minister Ciftci detailed the government's strategic approach to border security and domestic stability.
Türkiye's Defense Ministry had announced on Wednesday that NATO air and missile defense assets in the Eastern Mediterranean intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile that was detected heading toward Turkish airspace after being fired from Iran and crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace.
"Our first scenario is to meet and manage the migration mobility on the Iranian side before it reaches the borders of Türkiye," Ciftci explained.
"Our second scenario is to create buffer zones on the border line to bring the mobility under control if the migration cannot be stopped. Our third scenario, as a last resort, is to take the immigrants into the borders of Türkiye and shelter them under control."
To prepare for a possible influx, the government is initially building capacity to accommodate 90,000 people. These preparations include tent cities and temporary shelter areas.
Ciftci noted that he is in close contact with the governors of the border provinces of Van, Hakkari, Igdir, and Agri. "There is no extraordinary density at the border gates. For now, there is no alarming situation at the border," he assured, adding that all state institutions remain on high alert.
