Defense Minister Yasar Guler met with senior Syrian officials, including Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, during an official visit to Ankara, Türkiye, culminating in the signing of a bilateral defense cooperation agreement.
Defense Minister Guler hosted Syrian Defense Minister Qasra, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and General Intelligence Chief Hussain al-Seleme at the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.
"Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler met with Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, who is paying an official visit to our country, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and General Intelligence Chief Hussain al-Seleme at the Ministry of National Defense," a statement from the Turkish Ministry of Defense noted on X.
"Following the meeting, where bilateral and regional defense and security issues were discussed, Minister Yasar Guler and Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Training and Consultancy," the ministry stated.
According to Syrian media outlet Al-Ikhbariyah, the Syria-Türkiye defense cooperation agreement aims to strengthen the Syrian army's capabilities and reform the security sector.
"The Ministry of Defense intends to sign a bilateral defense cooperation agreement with the Turkish Ministry of Defense aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Syrian Arab Army, developing its institutions and structure, and supporting the comprehensive reform process of the security sector," a source from the Syrian Ministry of Defense said, according to a report.
The agreement includes several key components aimed at modernizing Syria's military capabilities:
Military personnel exchange: Regular exchange of military personnel to participate in specialized training courses aimed at enhancing operational readiness and improving joint operational capabilities.
Specialized skills training: Training programs in the fields of counterterrorism, mine clearance, cybersecurity, military engineering, logistics, and peacekeeping operations in accordance with the best international practices.
Technical assistance: The deployment of specialized experts to support the modernization of military systems, organizational structures, and leadership capabilities.
