Türkiye has shipped advanced landing and navigation systems to Damascus International Airport and will deploy Aselsan-manufactured radar equipment next week as part of technical support for Syria's aviation infrastructure, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced Friday.

The instrument landing system (ILS) and DVOR/DME navigation equipment were delivered to Damascus Airport on Sept. 17, enabling aircraft to land safely in adverse weather conditions, according to the minister's statement on X.

Critical aviation systems deployed

"The ILS device that facilitates aircraft landing on the runway and the DVOR/DME system that provides direction and distance information to aircraft were sent to Damascus Airport on Sept. 17," Uraloglu said.

"The devices allow pilots to approach the runway safely and at the correct angle even in adverse weather conditions," he noted.

The minister explained that once installation and calibration are completed, air traffic at the airport will become more secure.

The shipment plan was prepared by Türkiye's General Directorate of State Airports Authority, with technical installation set to begin following infrastructure setup.

Uraloglu confirmed that Damascus Airport will also receive primary and secondary radar systems (PSR/SSR) and an approach control system (APP) to enhance aviation safety.

"These systems enable aircraft tracking in the air, allowing both the tower and air traffic control centers to operate with more reliable data," he stated.

Aselsan, Türkiye's defense company handling the radar and control system installation, has already begun construction work at the site.

"Parts of the radar systems whose production has been completed by Aselsan will also begin to be shipped next week," Uraloglu added.

The deployed systems represent a comprehensive aviation safety infrastructure:

  • The ILS enables precision approaches during low visibility conditions
  • DVOR/DME provides continuous navigation guidance to aircraft
  • PSR/SSR radar systems will track aircraft movements
  • APP systems will manage approach control operations

The technical support package aims to restore and modernize Damascus Airport's air traffic management capabilities, enabling safer operations.
