Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan issued a condolence message Sunday after the death of Qatar’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died at the age of 74.
Qatar’s Amiri Diwan announced Sunday morning that Sheikh Hamad had died, marking the passing of one of the Gulf state’s most prominent former rulers.
The Amiri Diwan, the official administrative office of Qatar’s ruling leadership, shared the announcement in a statement on the U.S.-based social media platform X.
Fidan said in a post on his NSosyal account that Türkiye was deeply saddened by the death of Sheikh Hamad, the former emir of Qatar and father of Qatar’s current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former emir of Qatar and the father of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani,” Fidan said.
Fidan described the late Sheikh Hamad as a distinguished leader and a wise statesman.
“We will always remember with gratitude the importance he attached to the development of relations with Türkiye, and his devoted efforts for regional and global peace and stability,” Fidan said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and the people of Qatar, and wish Allah’s mercy upon His Highness former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,” he added.
The Amiri Diwan said Sheikh Hamad died Sunday morning, corresponding to 27 Muharram 1448 AH and July 12, 2026.
“With hearts steadfast in faith in God’s decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great loss to the nation of the late — may God have mercy on him — His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,” the statement said.
Sheikh Hamad died at the age of nearly 74. He served as Qatar’s emir from 1995 to 2013.
In 2013, he handed power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Fidan’s condolence message highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s role in strengthening ties with Türkiye and his efforts toward regional and global peace and stability.
