Two oil tankers exploded and caught fire after attempting to pass through mined waters south of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said, as Iranian media reported new U.S. airstrikes and explosions in the central city of Yazd early Saturday.
Iranian state media cited the IRGC as saying the vessels struck mines while traveling through a mined route in the area.
The announcement came after the U.S. military said it had launched a seventh consecutive night of strikes against Iran.
The IRGC said the two oil tankers exploded and caught fire while attempting to travel through a mined route south of the Strait of Hormuz.
It warned sailors not to enter the mined waters for their own safety.
The IRGC described the Strait of Hormuz as “unsafe and completely closed” because of U.S. actions.
It said exporting “even chemical fertilizer or a single drop of oil and natural gas” through the strait would not be possible until U.S. attacks ended.
No further information was provided about the vessels, their crews or the extent of the damage caused by the explosions.
Five explosions were heard in the early hours of Saturday in Yazd, central Iran, state news agency IRNA reported.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency said U.S. warplanes carried out new attacks on several areas of Yazd around midnight.
According to Tasnim’s correspondent in the city, further explosions were heard at locations that had been struck only minutes earlier, while the sound of U.S. warplanes could also be heard over Yazd.
Iranian media had previously reported that U.S. aircraft attacked several locations in Yazd province and that five explosions were heard around the province.
No official statement had been issued on the extent of the damage in the targeted areas.
Officials said operational and inspection teams had been sent to the locations affected by the attacks.
Iranian news agency Mehr reported that explosions were heard in several provinces in southern Iran.
Iranian media had also reported recent U.S. attacks on the cities of Ahvaz and Yazd.
The latest explosions in Yazd followed the U.S. military’s announcement of a seventh night of strikes against Iran.
