Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, said Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries are “counterproductive” and could strengthen Israel’s position in the region.

Speaking at a video event at the Council on Foreign Relations, Gargash said Gulf countries increasingly see Iran as the source of attacks rather than Israel.

He said nearly 2,000 Iranian attacks on the UAE have been recorded so far, exceeding the number of attacks carried out by Iran against Israel.

Iran has said it is retaliating for U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that killed its supreme leader and other senior officials and commanders, adding that it is targeting U.S. assets in the Gulf.

Gargash and others, however, said Tehran is striking civilian facilities.

Stronger U.S.-Gulf ties expected

Gargash said he expects relations between Gulf countries and the United States to become “much, much stronger.”

“We see the United States as a major, major pillar in our defense strategy,” he said, adding that for the UAE it is not the sole defense partner.

He said Gulf countries are responding to Iran’s actions using American equipment and that the war is reinforcing these ties.

“We are seeing a relationship that is on an upward trajectory,” Gargash said.
