A United Nations peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded after shelling struck a U.N. base in southern Lebanon overnight, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Thursday.

"A UNIFIL peacekeeper died early this morning from critical injuries sustained when mortar shells struck his position," the force said in a statement.

UNIFIL said two additional peacekeepers were wounded in the attack and announced that an investigation had been launched into the incident.

Lebanese medic killed in Israeli strike

Separately, Lebanon's Health Ministry said a paramedic was killed and another wounded in an Israeli strike targeting a medical team in southern Lebanon early Thursday.

According to the ministry, the attack targeted an ambulance team in the town of Zebdine in the Nabatieh district.

The ministry said it was the fourth Israeli attack on paramedics and medical facilities in less than 24 hours.

Ceasefire talks continue despite violence

The latest incidents came as Lebanese and Israeli officials held a fourth round of U.S.-sponsored talks in Washington aimed at preserving the ceasefire and addressing unresolved security issues.

During the negotiations, Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend their fragile ceasefire and establish "pilot zones" that would place designated areas under the exclusive control of the Lebanese Armed Forces and exclude all non-state actors.

Israel has continued near-daily airstrikes and ground operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was later extended until early July.

According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed 3,516 people and injured 10,674 others across the country.

Israel continues to maintain a military presence in several areas of southern Lebanon, including territories it has held for decades as well as areas seized during the 2023-24 conflict. Israeli forces have also advanced several kilometers into Lebanese territory during the current hostilities.
