U.S. forces targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for launching what it called “unprovoked” missile, drone and small boat attacks against American warships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said Thursday.
CENTCOM said U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta and USS Mason were moving through the international sea passage toward the Gulf of Oman on May 7 when Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones and small boats.
“U.S. forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes as U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, May 7,” CENTCOM said.
No U.S. assets were struck, the command said.
CENTCOM said U.S. forces eliminated inbound threats and struck Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking U.S. forces.
The targeted facilities included missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes, according to CENTCOM.
The command said the strikes were carried out in self-defense after the U.S. destroyers came under attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
An Iranian state media report said commercial facilities at Bahman Pier on Qeshm Island had been targeted during an exchange of fire between Iranian security forces and “the enemy.”
CENTCOM said U.S. forces “do not seek escalation” but remain ready to protect American forces.
“CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces,” the statement said.
