The U.S. Mission in Saudi Arabia on Sunday restricted government employees’ access to airports in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam following attacks on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital.

In a security alert dated Oct. 11, the mission said U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as well as airports in Jeddah and Dammam.

The measure expands restrictions announced for Riyadh following fatal attacks on the capital’s airport.

US citizens urged to exercise caution

The U.S. Mission said it was aware of attacks on King Khalid International Airport on Oct. 10 and “strongly recommends” that U.S. citizens avoid the airport and surrounding areas.

It urged travelers to exercise “extreme caution” when using all major airports in Saudi Arabia.

U.S. citizens were also advised to prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and other travel disruptions and to check flight status directly with airlines and airports.

The security alert said U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling within 20 miles of the Yemen border because of safety risks.

Employees also require special authorization to travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir and Najran, as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu and Taif.
