U.S. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said President Donald Trump has “lost control of the war” against Iran and is in “panic mode,” as criticism grows over the ongoing conflict.
Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been among lawmakers criticizing the joint U.S.-Israeli military operation, which has entered its fourth week.
He previously described the campaign as “Trump’s insane war,” saying it is beginning to impact the U.S. economy following a sharp rise in fuel prices.
Trump has warned that the United States would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic-led resolution that sought to halt offensive U.S. military operations in Iran until Congress authorized them.
The vote was 53-47, largely along party lines, with most Republicans opposing the measure and most Democrats supporting it.
The resolution would have required Trump to seek congressional approval before continuing the military campaign.
Democrats said they will continue pushing similar measures to challenge what they describe as unilateral use of military force.
Democratic lawmakers have also demanded more information from the Trump administration on the goals, timeline and costs of the war.
“We do not know Trump’s goals. We do not know Trump’s timeline,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said ahead of the vote.
“We do not know what victory even looks like in his eyes. Enough is enough,” he added.
Lawmakers said the administration has so far briefed Congress only in classified settings.
