Several locations in Iran’s southwestern city of Bushehr, home to the country’s only civilian nuclear power plant, were struck by U.S. projectiles Monday morning, Iranian state media reported, as Tehran warned Washington over a separate attack on the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant.

“A few minutes ago, several locations in Bushehr city were hit by projectiles from the American enemy,” Bushehr Gov. Mohammad Mozaffari told Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

Mozaffari said authorities were investigating the scale and extent of the attacks. The reports did not say that the Bushehr nuclear power plant itself had been struck.

A political and security official in Bushehr province separately said an area near Khormoj, the administrative center of Dashti county, was hit early Monday.

Iran reports explosion in Isfahan, downs US MQ-9 over Bushehr

A loud explosion was also heard Monday in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency.

The source and cause of the explosion had not been determined, the report said.

Iranian media later reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy had shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper armed drone over Bushehr.

According to IRNA, the IRGC Navy used newly developed air defense systems to strike and bring down the drone over the city.

No further information about the reported incident was provided.

Tehran warns US over Darkhovin nuclear plant strike

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi warned the United States over its attack on the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

In a post on the U.S.-based social media platform X on Monday, Gharibabadi described the strike as a dangerous attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear infrastructure.

He said Washington would be held “fully responsible for the consequences arising from increased insecurity and instability.”

“Iran strongly condemns this act of aggression and will take the necessary measures to defend its national interests and security,” Gharibabadi said.

The Darkhovin nuclear power plant is one of Iran’s major civilian nuclear energy projects and is intended to generate electricity for the national power grid.

US reportedly plans to intensify campaign

The attacks came after the United States informed Israel that it planned to intensify its military campaign against Iran in the coming days, Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported Sunday.

The U.S. has increased its attacks against Iran in recent days, while Tehran has responded with strikes against facilities and bases it says are used by the U.S. military in several countries across the region.

The exchange of attacks has continued despite a memorandum of understanding signed by the U.S. and Iran in June through Pakistani mediation to end their conflict and work toward a lasting peace agreement.
