US, Syria discuss bilateral ties and SDF integration at Munich Security Conference

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Feb. 13.

They discussed local and regional developments, Syria's unity, and U.S. support for a recent integration agreement with the SDF.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the meeting emphasized Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The U.S. side confirmed support for the Syrian government, the recent integration agreement with the SDF, and the Syrian state's efforts to combat Daesh.

Key points of the discussions

Discussions also covered bilateral relations between Syria and the United States and ways to develop them in various fields, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry statement.

A photo from the meeting showed al-Shaibani seated side by side with SDF's Mazloum Abdi across from Rubio. The U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria posted on X: "A picture is worth a thousand words—a new beginning."

The Syrian delegation was led by al-Shaibani, and the meeting included Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed, according to additional accounts.

The 62nd Munich Security Conference took place Feb. 13-15 in Munich.
