U.S. President Donald Trump said that Washington would not invest in Iran but would not prevent other countries or companies from doing so under the memorandum of understanding reached with Tehran.

Trump made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, eastern France.

The U.S. president described the agreement with Iran as strong, although he acknowledged that its details remained unclear.

“Nobody knows what is happening, but it is a very strong agreement,” Trump said. “Most people seem very happy.”

Trump said Washington would remain outside direct investment in Iran while allowing investment from others to proceed.

“The U.S. will not invest in Iran,” he said, adding that Washington would not block investments made in the country.

Trump says memorandum is not a final agreement

Trump stressed that the arrangement with Iran was not yet a final settlement.

“The agreement is not final. This is a memorandum of understanding,” he said.

His remarks indicated that the document remained an initial framework rather than a completed agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Trump said the future of the arrangement would depend on Iran’s conduct and whether he remained satisfied with how the memorandum was implemented.

He did not provide additional details about the terms of the agreement or the investments that could be made in Iran.

Trump threatens renewed military action

Trump warned that the U.S. could resume military action against Iran if he became dissatisfied with developments.

“If I do not like the situation, we will start firing again and raining bombs down on them,” he said.

“If they do not behave well, we will go back to dropping bombs directly on their heads,” Trump added.

Trump said Iran had behaved badly for 47 years.

The comments came as Trump met el-Sisi during the G7 summit, where the two leaders held bilateral talks.

Trump presented the memorandum as a strong arrangement while emphasizing that it was not final and could be followed by renewed U.S. strikes if Iran did not meet Washington’s expectations.
