The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier that has been involved in operations related to the Middle East war, returned Monday to a naval base in Crete, according to an AFP photographer.
The vessel arrived at Souda Bay, where it had previously taken on food, fuel and ammunition in February.
The return comes after the carrier’s recent deployment in the region amid ongoing conflict.
The USS Gerald R. Ford reported a fire on March 12 while at sea.
According to available information, the fire broke out in a laundry area on board the vessel.
Two crew members were injured in the incident. No further details were provided about the extent of the fire or damage to the ship.
Regional escalation has continued to flare since the U.S. and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing so far over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
