Search teams have located the wreckage of the Filo Jet passenger ferry that capsized and sank off Girne while traveling from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to Mersin, as efforts continue to find 20 people still missing.
TRNC President Tufan Erhurman announced that the wreckage had been reached and said imaging and search operations were continuing around the clock.
“TCG Alemdar has also arrived. It has the same technology as TCG Isin. Imaging and search operations are continuing on a 24-hour basis,” Erhurman said.
The Filo Jet sank around midday on Aug. 31 while traveling from Girne to Mersin’s Tasucu Port.
Eight bodies have been recovered so far from what was described as the largest maritime disaster in TRNC history.
Search-and-rescue operations for the 20 people still missing have continued for four days.
The TRNC presidency confirmed Wednesday that teams had located the wreckage as operations involving TCG Alemdar and TCG Isin continued.
