Yemen's army launched retaliatory attacks against Houthi positions in Taiz and Hodeidah provinces on Saturday after renewed fighting broke out between the two sides, the military announced.
The operation targeted Houthi positions across several fronts in Taiz, while government forces also struck command centers, fortifications and gathering points in southern Hodeidah, according to a statement carried out by the military-run September Net website.
Government forces shelled Houthi positions on the Dabab and Garab fronts west of Taiz city and the Salu front in the south of the province. The army also conducted attacks on positions along the Makbine front in western Taiz.
The military described the strikes as retaliation for Houthi attacks targeting government-held positions on those fronts. During the exchanges, army air defense systems intercepted Houthi drones over the Makbine front, thwarting attempts to strike military positions.
The army also targeted Houthi command-and-control centers, fortified positions and gathering points in southern Hodeidah province.
Military officials said the operation came after the Houthis escalated tensions on the Marib and Hadramawt fronts and targeted maritime traffic in the territorial waters off Al-Muha district.
The latest clashes come as Yemen's conflict, now in its second decade, escalates following the collapse of the 2022 U.N.-brokered truce last month.
The escalation followed a Saudi strike on Sanaa International Airport after the Houthis welcomed an Iranian aircraft. In response, the group launched attacks on Saudi territory, declared a maritime blockade against the kingdom and began targeting Saudi-linked shipping.
Earlier this week, Houthi missile and drone attacks in Marib province killed at least 58 government troops, while shelling on residential neighborhoods and displacement camps left at least two civilians dead and 14 others wounded, according to government officials and military sources.
Medical officials also reported that Houthi fighters killed 16 government-aligned soldiers south of the port city of Hodeidah last month.
