The Yemeni army said Sunday it carried out a series of airstrikes on Houthi positions and military vehicles in the southwestern province of Taiz and the central province of Marib, claiming casualties and the destruction of several vehicles. The Houthis had not commented as of Sunday evening.

Saba TV, the state-run channel, reported that the army launched concentrated strikes on Houthi positions and vehicles on fronts south and southwest of Marib.

The strikes “destroyed and disabled a number of combat vehicles” and caused losses in personnel and equipment, the channel said. It gave no figures.

In Taiz, the army’s media center for the al-Aqroud front said government forces had retaken full control of the Mahyoub Thabet and Watheeb hills in al-Dhunayb village, in the southern part of the province.

The center said the advance inflicted heavy losses on Houthi forces but offered no details.

A separate statement from the center said army forces and allied Popular Resistance fighters also recaptured al-Furqan school in al-Dhunayb village on the same front.

Air raids around Taiz city

September Net, a website affiliated with Yemen’s Defense Ministry, reported that army warplanes struck Houthi positions, deployments and vehicles to the west, east and north of Taiz city.

It said the targets included Houthi gatherings in the al-Siyahi area west of the city, as well as positions in al-Hawban and on Sixty Street to the north.

Warplanes also hit a Houthi position on Sofitel hill, east of the city, that included a tank and artillery pieces, the website said.

Other strikes targeted positions on al-Jaasha hill and in the al-Maqrami area, also east of Taiz.

The website said the strikes caused casualties among the Houthis and destroyed several of their vehicles. It did not say how many people were killed or wounded or how many vehicles were destroyed.

Mosque attack alleged, governor urges action

Yemen’s Information Ministry accused the Houthis of firing missiles at al-Saeed Mosque in central Taiz city while worshippers were inside.

In a statement on X, the ministry said the group “targeted al-Saeed Mosque in central Taiz city with missiles while worshippers were inside.” It called the attack a “flagrant violation of the sanctity of mosques and a direct threat to civilian lives.”

Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan called for urgent national and international action to address the humanitarian consequences of the escalation and to end the siege he said the Houthis have imposed on the province for nearly 12 years.

Yemen has been gripped by conflict since the Houthis, an armed group from the north of the country, seized the capital Sanaa in 2014.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.

Taiz, one of Yemen’s most populous provinces, has been a major front line for much of that time, with its main city divided between government-held and Houthi-held areas.
