The historic city of Edirne is preparing to host one of the world’s oldest sporting traditions, as final arrangements intensify ahead of the 665th Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival, where wrestlers compete coated in olive oil in a centuries-old test of strength and endurance.
Municipal crews are carrying out extensive restoration activities across the venue, including repairs and repainting of spectator stands, as well as improvements to public areas designated for visitors. The wrestling field, traditionally known as the “dual prayer meadow”is being cleared of wild vegetation and watered regularly to ensure optimal competition conditions.
Recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival dates back more than six centuries and is regarded as one of the oldest continuously held sporting competitions in the world, attracting wrestlers and spectators from Türkiye and abroad.
A key element of the festival preparations has also been delivered to the venue: approximately two tons of olive oil, supplied by Trakya Birlik. The oil will be used in the traditional oiling of wrestlers before the bouts, a defining feature of the sport.
Edirne Municipality Culture, Arts and Social Affairs Director Tayfun Zafer stated that preparations are progressing on schedule, noting that both seating areas and the wrestling field are undergoing continuous maintenance. He also expressed appreciation to Trakya Birlik for its annual contribution.
Zafer added that the field is being watered daily to preserve its condition ahead of the competitions. Pest control operations are also being conducted throughout the Sarayici area as part of health and safety measures for both athletes and visitors.
